. Agile Coaching

An Internationally focused Agile Coach, I've worked extensively with teams in India, the Philippines, Austria, Poland, and the US. The common goal has been the same - to help them become more Awesome.

. Traveling Fool

Traveling is most fun when you're a part of the locale, and not a tourist buffered from your surroundings by a hotel and a rigid plan. There are so many ways to make this happen, from CouchSurfing to hostels. Spontaneity in travel is not for all, but definitely for me.

. Photography & Video

Photography was my livelihood for many years, prior to my move to IT. It has recently renewed as my passion. This includes videography, as well. The tools available now allow you to unleash your creativity, providing opportunities to explore.

Why the passion for travel

Until you stand on the Great Wall and feel the uneven stones under your feet and traverse its steep inclines, until you feel firsthand the memories of Hiroshima and see the emotions of those who travel to see, to remember, until you see the flavors of cities and countrysides and the many colors and dialects and religions that make them each uniquely home, until then you can never really appreciate the world and its diversity, and understand fully that we're all the same.

Transparency, Inspection, and Adaptation

The three pillars of Scrum incude Transparency, Inspection, and Adaptation. Without transparency you can't achieve success with the other two, making transparency the core of a team's ability to succeed with Scrum. If you use Version One, this excel tool and the associated training videos on its use can help you and your teams succeed.

CouchSurfiing.com

I have often started a conversation with "are you familiar with couchsurfing?" I'm amazed at how many are not (aren't there a million of us?) but also how excited people get, once they cross the "is it safe to stay?" chasm and understand, of course it is, just be wise in your decisions. So then it becomes a million plus one. www.couchsurfing.org

The role of the Scrum Master is still relatively new at the company I’m currently working at. The company’s Agile roots date back to 2001 when they started with Extreme Programming (XP,)  which does not define a similar role. Early last year we began the formal adoption of Scrum, which recognizes the importance of this role and the support it provides to the teams. Scrum is the most widely adopted Agile framework, and its benefits include that it provides a more holistic view than XP by way of a framework that extends far beyond the development team.  It is important to note that Scrum’s process framework is used in conjunction with XP to round out the organization’s Agile practices, not a something that replaces it.

As part of the rollout of Scrum classes were held globally that qualified more than 200 people to take the exam that, if passed, would give them the Professional Scrum Master (PSM) designation as awarded by Scrum.org. Many did take the exam, and we have ........Continue Reading!.......

Most command-and-control managers hold the perspective that micro-managing – so despised by all of us – is a behavior exhibited by other managers, not them, and that their management style is far from that. They often feel they empower their team and clip_image002[8]create an environment of trust and team camaraderie, as well as accountability. But unless the role of manager transcends to that of a leader, the nature of the role itself will, in the context of a Scrum team, only be defined as micro-managing through command and control.

The three roles of Scrum – but no Manager?

Let’s start off with the ........Continue Reading!.......

The Agile Central Europe conference (ACE!) is coming to Krakow from June 13th through 15th.

ACE! is the largest regional conference of its kind in Central Europe, attracting people from all over the region.

The innovative ACE! format, premiered in 2011, and successfully copied by other events since, allows every attendee to be exposed to a broad range of ideas from foreign and regional thought leaders and then to explore those ........Continue Reading!.......

image We’re all aware of the retrospective meeting, which provides the final closure to a sprint as well as a forum for the team to share their insights on the last sprint with the goal of becoming better. Sadly, it’s all too often that this cadence meeting is postponed, cancelled, or attended partially, or its purpose watered down in one of many ways. Even in organizations where Agile is fully supported, I’ve often seen the retrospective viewed with the same excitement as a root canal. And for good reason. It’s often painful, repetitive, and flat out boooorrrriiiinnnngggg.

But I’ve also seen teams that wouldn’t even consider going ........Continue Reading!.......

This morning was a quiet morning, with low winds compared to yesterday’s 30mph wind gusts.  The day started with a boat ride.  My wife took these pictures as I picked her up from Big Daddy’s on Lake Grapevine.

The three pillars of Scum include Transparency, Inspection, and Adaptation. These three pillars are core to the success of any empirical process, but especially important within the Scrum framework as well as for all Agile practices, whether the practices are focused on technical excellence, simple design, or the successful delivery of working software.

Transparency is a pre-requisite to inspection and adaptation. It implies a brutal honesty which leads to an accuracy of information that allows for inspection to occur based on reality, which in turn allows for the teams to adapt in a way that leads to continual improvement. Too often we seek to flavor reality, providing the information we believe fits the expectations of others or that allows us to save face or tout our successes while downplaying our challenges. This is ........Continue Reading!.......

I spend a lot of time on the road, and sometimes you just miss some of the simlpe things of home.  Like your TV, your local channels, and your DVR recordings.  A year or so ago I got a Slingbox, which allows you to connect to your TV from anywhere in the world.  I now have three, one of which isn’t even hooked up to a TV at all.

The SlingBox allows me to use my iPad or MacBook Pro and even my iPhone as a TV.  It’s hooked up to a Tivo or Roku player, and whatever is streaming from it is now available for watching and controlling from wherever I am.  This is especially useful when traveling abroad, as most streaming feeds, such as Amazon Instand Video or Hulu Plus, are not available outside of the US.  Using a Slingbox allows you to stream the content ........Continue Reading!.......

Velocity is a metric that is often misused in Scrum. Velocity, defined as the average number of story points earned across several sprints, is a valuable tool for the team. It helps them understand what they can accomplish, where they’re facing challenges, and how to successfully forecast against a backlog in a low-cost but accurate manner. All too often, we use it as a tool to set goals or expectations for teams and to be the driver of what they undertake, both of which can result in consequences opposite of the ones intended.

A Story of Success

This is the story of a team that dramatically increased their velocity, in part, because they ........Continue Reading!.......
